7/6/2023 0 Comments Angle of repose bookHe, a White man, improved upon the life one of the most recognized and celebrated American woman writers/artists of the latter 19th century. Wallace Stegner claimed that Mary Hallock Foote wasn’t “interesting enough” to write a biography about, that by creating her fictional counterpart, Susan Ward, he made her “immortal”. However, it is my belief that when you create a “fictional” character whose life is rooted so deeply in the life of a real person that it’s hard to distinguish between the two, when you quote, word for word, from that person’s memoirs without proper citation…I believe that is ethically wrong. Some would argue that this falls into an ethical gray area, and perhaps the case could be argued from that position (and has been). Angle of Repose is, in a word, plagiarized. But this is only if you read the book as an isolated object and know nothing about the author and his source material.īecause to put it quite bluntly, Wallace Stegner lifted the majority of his story wholesale from (and without giving credit to) the then-unpublished memoirs of Mary Hallock Foote. Without context, Angle of Repose, which won the 1972 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, is an interesting, well-written, and thought-provoking-if rather problematic-novel. To consider this book out of context is only to get fractions of the whole picture. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Dating ish book"About this title" may belong to another edition of this title. The second volume is called How Sluggo Survives, and they get Jack Survives author Jerry Moriarty to do the introduction. Perhaps mostly because Bushmiller’s line is so consistent that it looks weird then some of the strips are printed much bigger than the rest, resulting in heavier lines. Now, I’ve grown up with newspaper strip reprints that are hacked up any which way, but this does look a bit odd. … and also daily strips, which are arranged like this, for the most part. These books have both Sunday strips (like above)… With most strips, that would have resulted in a rather stilted reading experience, but each Nancy strip stands very well on its own, and there’s a timeless quality to the strips, so it’s not too jarring to mix strips that were created decades apart. There’s been several books written about Nancy, and I think pretty much everything that needs to be said has been said about the subject, so this’ll be a very quick blog post.Įach volume has an introduction from an artist that talks about the ineffable quality of Nancy, and Bill Griffith does the first one. Never going out of print since it first hit shelves, My Utmost for His Highest gives the words of a man humbly living out his life full out for Christ. The devotional My Utmost for His Highest is like a timeless hymn, still speaking to people generations later. Though the hymns I’ve connected with were published longer ago than my familiarity, it was rooted in a consistent power: God, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrew 13:8). I’ve shed tears, singing hymns that seemed uniquely composed for current events in my life. Still, it somehow captivated your heart today as you followed each word. Has a hymn ever resonated with your heart and mind? The hymn may have been written many years ago, even before the birth of your great-grandparents. |
